91视频 University is fostering the strengthening of studies and the sustainability of the Balinese language through the Linguistic Exploration Colloquium Series (KeLiR). This event was organized by the Doctoral Program in Linguistics at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), 91视频 University, on Thursday (September 17, 2026), at the Widya Sabha Mandala Auditorium.
In his remarks, the Rector of 91视频 University, Prof. Ir. I Ketut Sudarsana, S.T., Ph.D., expressed his appreciation to the FIB鈥攕pecifically the Doctoral Program in Linguistics鈥攆or organizing KeLiR. He noted that the event serves as an academic forum to discuss linguistic issues and their connection to community life. According to him, the activity demonstrates the university’s commitment to advancing linguistic studies and fulfilling its academic responsibility regarding language-related matters.
The Rector emphasized that the Balinese language is more than just a collection of vocabulary, grammar, or a means of communication. Embedded within it are the ways the community understands life, builds social relationships, positions itself within the environment, and passes down knowledge and values 鈥嬧�媋cross generations. Therefore, the continuity of the Balinese language is inextricably linked to the sustainability of Balinese culture.
According to the Rector, 91视频 University bears the responsibility of providing a space for academic dialogue where various issues can be examined critically. A university’s role extends beyond merely generating knowledge; it also involves interpreting changes and translating intellectual insights into ideas that benefit society.
KeLiR is expected to go beyond being a mere forum for exchanging views. The event aims to spark new research questions, strengthen academic networks, open opportunities for collaboration, and produce recommendations that can inform the development of language policies and practices.
The theme, “Cultivating Balinese: Weaving a Future of Balinese Language and Culture,” underscores the importance of viewing Balinese as a living, evolving language. “The Balinese language needs to be cultivated, not merely preserved,” the Rector advised.
He added that efforts to safeguard the Balinese language cannot rely solely on looking back at the past. Language must find a place in contemporary life鈥攊ncluding in education, family settings, community activities, the arts, research, and technological development. Efforts to develop the Balinese language must be grounded in an understanding of its character, values, and diversity, ensuring that change is not equated with a loss of identity.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. I Nyoman Aryawibawa, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., noted that the topics discussed during the event examined linguistic phenomena not merely from a linguistic perspective, but also from a cultural one. The Dean emphasized that modern linguistic research is interdisciplinary rather than isolated, actively incorporating cultural aspects. He highlighted the Balinese language as one of the languages 鈥嬧�媢sed to test the robustness of linguistic theories.
The KeLiR event featured academics from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at 91视频 University. A total of 150 participants鈥攃omprising members of the 91视频 University academic community and the general public鈥攖ook part in the event.
